What is police brutality?
The issue of police brutality is a serious issue that is growing in the city of Chicago. People must be aware of it and know how to resist being a victim of abuse. For those who don't know what police brutality is, Police brutality is the excessive use of force, usually physical, but potentially in the form of verbal attacks and psychological intimidation, by a police officer (Deborah England, 2009). Widespread police brutality exists in many countries, even those that prosecute the practice (Moreno, 2013). Police brutality is one of several forms of police misconduct, which include: false arrest; intimidation; racial profiling; political repression; surveillance abuse; sexual abuse; and police corruption (Bellware, 2013) However, as mentioned before, it may involve physical force but never reaching death under police custody. I have chosen the topic of police brutality because I have heard of cases of police officers abusing innocent civilians. I want to become a police officer myself in the near future and learning more of these cases make me feel disgusted, and I want to change that. I want the people to feel safe around police officers, not scared. Police officers are here to SERVE and PROTECT us, not abuse us. More and more cases of police brutality on innocent victims have recently surfaced. The increase of police brutality is due to racial profiling, violation of rights, and classism.
