sociological imagination
A value is a broad idea about what most people in a society consider to be desirable. Police officers value the power they have that we don’t have. Every society has expectations about how its members should and should not behave. A norm is a guideline or an expectation for behavior. Each society makes up its own rules for behavior and decides when those rules have been violated and what to do about it. Norms change constantly. We make police officers feel powerful since they have all the authority. But sometimes police officers take their powers to the next level. There are many cases of police officers using excessive force and beating innocent civilians. More and more cases of police brutality have surfaced. Mainly because of racial profiling, violation of rights, and classism. Some officers dehumanize us.
